Memorial Tree Planted in Gerry Coleman’s Memory

Friends of John “Gerry” Coleman gathered on April 27, 2008 to plant a swamp white oak in his memory on Arbor Day. Gerry passed away on March 21, 2005. The Smethport Shade Tree Committee assisted in the selection of the tree species and the planting site on Hamlin Lake Island. New Artist Guild Formed

The Smethport Artists’ & Artisans’ Guild was formed on April 8 to cultivate and promote the creative arts and encourage community participation in visual and performing arts. Hosted at the Keppel Stone Works Studio, the new Guild drafted bylaws governing its activities, which are expected to include exhibitions, performances, shows, workshops and demonstrations. The 7th annual Seneca Highlands IU-9 Regional Computer Fair Competition was held April 8 in Smethport. Over 20 students submitted projects in various computer-related categories. There was also competition for the 2009 Computer Fair logo, which will appear on materials, caps and T-shirts publicizing next year’s event. Library Raises $16,000 at Annual Auction

The Hamlin Memorial Library raised $16,000 at the 21st annual dinner and auction held at the Smethport Firehouse on March 8. The money will be used for operating expenses. A separate event will raise funds for the library’s planned $700,000 expansion, of which $300,000 comes from grants. When completed, the project will double the size of the current building.
