Smethport’s Liz Reap Carlson to Compete in China

Liz Carlson to represent U.S. on cycling team headed to Beijing.Liz Reap Carlson, formerly of Smethport, now living in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, is among 12 Americans who will compete in round three of the UCI Track World Cup to be held in Beijing on the Laoshan Velodrome from January 13 to 15.

Representing the women’s side of the cycling competition, Liz Carlson (Jim Thorpe, PA/Black Dog Pro Cycling Team) and Tela Crane (Sammamish, WA/Lake Washington Velo/Broadmark Capital) will race in the team sprint.

Carlson will also ride the 500-meter time trial, while Crane will compete in the keirin, a variant of the sprint which has different rules. The third member of the women’s team, Jennifer Valente (San Diego, CA/Exergy TWENTY 12) will compete in the sprint and the keirin.   

The U.S. participated in the first round of World Cup competition held in Astana, Kazakhstan in November and won two medals at the second round in Cali, Colombia in December. In Beijing, the American squad will compete in nine events on the Velodrome built for the 2008 Olympics.

After the competition in Beijing, the final round of the World Cup will be held in London on the 2012 Olympic Velodrome from February 17 to 19.
