New Scholarship Established for Smethport Students

A new scholarship has been established with the Smethport Area School District Foundation to benefit Smethport students interested in pursuing careers in education.

The Stephen and Beckie Herzog Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior at Smethport Area High School who plans to prepare for a teaching career.

The scholarship is a tribute to the Herzogs who felt that excellent teachers were vital to the success of every student.

“Our parents felt all students should receive a quality education, no matter what financial barriers they encountered or which career path they chose,” said Janene Herzog Dunn. “They knew that students would experience greater success academically when influenced by a teacher who excelled in the classroom. It’s only fitting that a scholarship in their name be geared toward students with that same passion.”

Mr. Herzog, a 1961 SAHS alumnus, taught chemistry and math in New Jersey and at Smethport High School before joining the family business. Even after leaving the classroom, he loved discussing chemistry, especially with former students, and often helped students who worked for him with their studies. Mrs. Herzog was a kindergarten teacher in New Jersey before devoting her time and attention to her family.
