Smethport Sam Sees Shadow: 6 More Weeks of Winter
February 2, 2010
In a Groundhog Day celebration conducted today by Phil Kennedy, “Smethport Sam”, Punxsutawney Phil’s second cousin, was let loose at the Senior Center. It wasn’t long before Smethport Sam, played by Don Ross, discovered his own shadow, played by Don Combs, signifying 6 more weeks of winter.
The official proclamation was read by Phil Kennedy, who was aided by Smethport Sam’s handlers, Katie James and Taylor Swift. The event, organized by Phillis Barnhart, drew about 40 people and included lunch.

Smethport is adjacent to 2 million acres of public land that is home to the largest elk herd in the eastern U.S., pockets of white-tailed deer, 15,000 black bear, as well as an abundance of turkeys, pheasants, grouse, waterfowl and other small game.
