Smethport Brings Home D-9 Class A Softball Crown

The punch probably tasted a little sweeter and the cookies were a little fresher at the Smethport High sports banquet Thursday evening after the Lady Hubbers brought home the District 9 Class A softball title following a 2-1 win over Curwensville earlier in the day. “I have a banquet tonight and I’m going to bawl through the whole speech,” said Christine Lightner, Smethport head coach. “I don’t know what I’m going to say. I’m so excited. We needed this District 9 championship and it’s been a long time (2004) since we had one.” The Lady Hubbers (20-1) disposed of their old nemesis as defending PIAA champion Curwensville (20-2) had knocked Smethport out of the D-9 semifinals the past two seasons.
