Smethport Web – by Lorraine Jacobs
On Saturday, May 30, from 10 am until 2 pm, Hamlin Lake Park will be the venue for a variety of environmental and educational themed events.
At your leisure, explore the natural world aided by the experts of fishing, bird watching, wildlife, forestry, aquatics, outdoor living skills and steps toward sustainability — also known as “green living.”
The Green Stop, a 4-H fundraiser, will offer opportunities to learn about the importance of honeybees, Fair Trade and Local Shopping, and eating lower on the food chain.
Through a nominal fee, Green Stop visitors can make a beeswax candle, sample organic honey, taste Fair Trade Chocolate, dare to eat a special treat, and fashion a tree cookie key ring. These items make great gifts for Father’s Day or upcoming birthdays.
The Smethport Arts Council will conduct an up-cycling, make and take craft table. Up-cycling is an opportunity to reuse or recycle household items into arts and crafts.
In addition to nature adventure stations, the Shavers Creek Raptor Show will be part of the program. Through displays and hands-on activities, explore the wonders of the birds that rule the top of food chains; learn the life story and environmental challenges of these mighty birds.
Admission is FREE. See you there!

The sessions are funded in part by a PPA grant from the PA Council on the Arts. Call the Hamlin Library 887-5326 or stop in to register.

Two grants - Get Active and WalkWorks – support Smethport residents in their efforts to stay or get fit.
