Potato Creek Trail Association
Meeting Minutes for June 17, 2009
The Wolfinger trail signs are up at the major intersections. We need to install the highway signs, one by Black Gate, one by Goosechaser. We also got some brushing done on Saturday, especially along the Smethport Overlook Trail. Other things that we need to attend to for the Wolfinger trails includes getting blazes up.
Nancy Dart and family are going to do some work on the equestrian trail bridge areas so they may be able to bring the drill up for installing those signs at that time. We will notify the membership when they go out so other volunteers can join them. Ray Dart plans on getting some underlayment matting material and gravel for the wet areas by the bridges so the horses can ride there. We discussed putting a temporary sign on the two bridges asking that horses not use them because they are not safe enough for horses. We need to work on locating some grants we can apply for to replace the bridges so they are safe for all the users.
Also, Corky Hull will identify the landowners along the Pennsy trail (equestrian trail) so we can work on getting landowner agreements with them. We’ll need this before we can apply for any grants for improvements. Corky says we need about ten posts and signs along the Pennsy. For now we are going to name the equestrian trail the “Pennsy Trail”.
Barbara Bowman agreed to lead the Walk for Doc this weekend. It is likely to be muddy! Barb also suggested that we look into getting medallions for the walking sticks. She is going to ask someone she knows about the feasibility of getting those made. Michelle Burns will ask Les about graphic designs for the medallions. We need to look for someone who makes walking sticks, which we might sell as a fundraiser and a place to put the medallions on.
Jim Herzog and Corky Hull will have kayaks and a canoe at the car show this weekend for people to try, asking for a small donation to the PCTA.
Curt Wallace will do some homework on types of trail markers we can use for Goosechaser that could be mowed over, perhaps something relatively flat that sticks into the ground. We need to mark the trail along its length.
The kiosks are being built; we need to get some brochures with the trail info on it. Michelle will talk with Les about getting “real brochures” and a larger map for the kiosk. We could use some distance measurements for the trails, also.
Another idea for fund raising was an orienteering race, and a trail running race.
We need to e-mail the membership to request renewing of membership for the year.
The next meeting will be the third Wednesday night of July, at 6:30 at the Senior Center.
