Jeff Andrulonis, president and CEO of Colonial Radio Group, was the featured speaker at the 10th Annual Business Dinner held Thursday by the Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce. He encouraged business owners, government officials and community volunteers gathered at the American Legion hall to think differently to survive and grow during this slow economy.

Andrulonis cited a tendency that could spell trouble for businesses in Smethport and the rest of McKean County if carried to an extreme — saving rather than investing. “We can’t be so frugal that we save ourselves into bankruptcy and mediocrity.” Read more

Plan in the Works for PA Route 6 CNG Corridor

The PA Route 6 CNG (compressed natural gas) Corridor would establish a series of CNG filling pumps at existing filling stations across the Pennsylvania US Route 6 Corridor stretching 400 miles from New York State near Milford, Pike County, Pa. in the east and through Crawford County, Pa. to the Ohio state line on the west.

Smethport Mayor Ross Porter from McKean County, chair of the PA Route 6 CNG Corridor Leadership Team and board member of the PA Route 6 Alliance, said the project is in its early stages and could be a model for the whole country. He said they would initially like to have pumps every 30 or 50 miles along Route 6.

Porter Recognized for Efforts with PA Wilds ‎

The Pennsylvania Wilds announced winners of the 2011 “Champion of the PA Wilds” award. The award is presented by the PA Wilds planning team to recognize the efforts of individuals and organizations related to components of the PA Wilds Initiative: economic development, planning, community revitalization, community character stewardship and conservation.

The planning team consists of over 50 partners and stakeholders from across the PA Wilds region, which includes the counties of Clearfield, Clarion, northern Centre, Warren, McKean, Potter, Tioga, Lycoming, Clinton, Cameron, Forest, Jefferson and Elk.

Among the winners is Smethport Mayor Ross Porter, who is also co-proprietor of The Mansion District Inn with his wife, Jovanna. Porter and the other award winners were recognized at the PA Wilds Planning Team’s annual luncheon held in St. Marys on April 21. Porter was the only winner from McKean County. Read more

Local Radio Executive Bags Easter Turkey — the Hard Way

Smethport resident Jeff Andrulonis, President and CEO of Colonial Radio Group, narrowly escaped serious injury Thursday morning when a gobbler turkey went completely through the driver side window of his Kia Sedona minivan.

The incident occurred on Barnum Road in McKean County, just south of the New York state line, while Jeff was en route to his office in Olean. The impact with the turkey broke Jeff’s nose and resulted in abrasions on his face, ear and hand. Read more

Bucktail Formation and Departure Reenactment to be Held April 23 in Smethport

On Saturday, April 23 in Smethport, PA, the Sesquicentennial 2011 Civil War Bucktail Formation and Departure will be reenacted in front of the McKean County Courthouse at 500 Main Street.

Activities begin with an 8:00 - 9:30 am breakfast at the Bennett House, now the site of Courtyard Restaurant, across from the McKean County Courthouse.

The reenactment officially begins at 9:30 in front of the courthouse with Saint Marys, PA resident Civil War Co. K Reenactor Charles Copello serving as Colonel Kane and Wharton, PA resident Civil War Co. I Reenactor Clarence Walker as Captain William T. Blanchard.   Read more

Smethport Piecemakers Quilt Guild to Host Tea Tasting and Show at Hamlin Memorial Library

The meeting room at the Hamlin Memorial Library will be transformed into a tea house on April 15th and 16th when the Smethport Piecemakers Quilt Guild hosts a “Bear Mountain Herb Tea Tasting” and Quilt Show.

The event will showcase quilts made by the guild members and feature organically grown teas blended by Helene and Stash Nawrocki from Genesee, Pennsylvania.

Helene will be on hand at the tasting to answer questions about her teas and have available seasonal and medicinal teas, balms and mists for sale. Children attending with an adult are welcome at the affair, which will include a tasting of savories, scones and deserts.

This event corresponds with the final two days of raffle tickets being sold for the lovely “Wood Clover” king size quilt that was made by the Smethport Piecemakers as a fundraiser for operating costs of the Hamlin Memorial Library. Raffle tickets for the quilt are currently available at Hamlin Library, where the quilt is on display in the meeting room.

The drawing of the lucky quilt winner will be made at the conclusion of the 3:00 pm tea seating on Saturday. Quilts will be on display along with small sewn and quilted items created by members of the guild that will be available for sale during the event.

Tickets for the tasting are available for $10 each at Hamlin Memorial Library in Smethport, during regular library hours. Event Seating Times are: Friday, April 15th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 16th at 10:30 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Please contact the library at 887-9262 for additional information.

Smethport Chamber Elects Board Members

At its general meeting last evening at Connie’s Route 6 Diner, the Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce elected board members to fill five vacancies. The new board will be officially introduced to the community at the Chamber’s 10th Annual Business Dinner on Thursday, April 28.

Elected to the Board were Judy Olson from Hamlin Bank, Renee Snyder from Buchanan Brothers Pharmacy and Wayne Foltz, a firefighter in Smethport who ran as an individual. Read more
