Kate (McAnallen) James has started a group called ‘Classy Crafters’ that meets twice a month at the Smethport Senior Center.

Everyone is welcome to join, bring a craft you are working on, or just come to watch or learn a new talent. Examples include painting, knitting, crocheting, scratch art, needle craft work, and scrap booking.

“We plan some shopping outings to Hobby Lobby to get supplies, and some special in house classes,” Kate said.

Having already held a session on March 25, Classy Crafters meets next on April 5th, and 26th, and May 3rd and 17th. Sessions are held from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

There is no charge to attend. “All we ask is once in awhile you donate an item that you made for the Senior Center to sell. This is in return for the use of the Senior Center,” Kate explained.

For questions please call Kate James at 887-2026. “Come and join us, make new friends, and share some laughs!”

Eagles Feel at Home on Hamlin Lake

March 16, 2011

Eagle sightings are becoming more frequent in Smethport, especially around Hamlin Lake. This week a male and female were spotted flying over the lake performing a mating ritual. Later the female landed on the lake bank while the male circled overhead before joining her, according to Amy Pierotti, who witnessed the event. These amazing photos (click the image) were taken by Paul Costa and Amy Pierotti.

The eagle population is expanding so quickly in this region that it is becoming a challenge to monitor. It is estimated by the Game Commission that there are just over 170 mating pairs statewide, versus only 3 pairs 30 years ago. With reintroduction and growth, this represents one of Pennsylvania’s greatest conservation successes.

The 24th annual Hamlin Memorial Library Dinner and Auction was held Saturday at the Fire House, attracting a sell-out crowd of 150 people, who enjoyed an evening of bidding and buying, while mingling and drinking.

After a buffet dinner prepared by Rose Campbell and Phyllis Russell, guests had an opportunity to finalize their bids on 156 items donated for the silent auction. Notable among them was a maple settee, wooden doll house, stone bird bath, 18 holes of golf for two plus cart at the Smethport Country Club, a whole beef tenderloin cut to order, a two-night stay at the Mansion District Inn, a laser engraved wall coat rack, and enough jewelry to start a small business. Impact of Digital Technology on Jobs

United Methodist Church Lenten Program
Talk by Wayne Pearson
March 9, 2011

Lent is especially a good time to see if we are following Christ’s two commandments; namely to love God and to love your Neighbor. Today, I want to focus on those neighbors who were laid off a year or so ago and are having a very difficult time finding comparable employment. These persons were managers, technicians, excellent knowledge workers or skilled workers in manufacturing, or the trades. These persons are not ne’re-do-wells and they are in their prime. The problem is that there is little hope of their being rehired because the jobs they left have been replaced by robots, new digital technology or have been shipped overseas. Read more

Your timing couldn’t be better! The University Of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health has teamed up with the Pennsylvania Department of Health on an important project called WalkWorks. Its goals are to:

– Identify and mark safe walking routes that are accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

– Establish guided community-based walking groups.

– Impact policy related to pedestrian transportation in the built environment.

WalkWorks is mapping and marking the trails, letting you know where they are and getting groups together in your community to get out and get walking.

Sign up and get or stay healthy and fit and shed a few pounds just in time for summer.
