Hamlin Library to co-sponsor Family Fishing Program

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Hamlin Memorial Library are sponsoring a free educational Family Fishing Program for families at Hamlin Lake on Saturday, June 5 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The program is open to families with children ages 5-15 years old. A parent or guardian must accompany all children to this event. No fishing license is needed. Fishing equipment will even be provided!    Read more

Stephan Gerth On a chilly Saturday evening in May of last year, a lone cyclist wearing a pack of essential provisions pushed down Main Street at a sauntering pace. With the possibility of rain, he was plotting suitable shelter for the night somewhere in the unfamiliar territory of Smethport, Pennsylvania. Wild animals and snakes were top of mind.

Sensing a fellow adventurer in need, Matt Muller (now on adventure in China) met the cyclist on the street to offer help. The ensuing conversation revealed that the cyclist was Stephan Gerth, from Marburg, Germany. He was on vacation and taking a cross-country tour alone, with San Francisco as his destination.   Read more

Smethport Observes National Day of Prayer

The National Day of Prayer was recognized with a ceremony held on the steps of the McKean County court house on Thursday, May 6. Community and religious leaders noted the theme of this 59th Annual Observance, Prayer for Such a Time as This, based on Nahum 1:7, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.”

Noting that he has experienced first hand the power of prayer, Mayor Ross Porter delivered this National Day of Prayer Proclamation on behalf of the Borough of Smethport:
