Shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, April 24, a line of Legion Riders led a group of distinguished prisoners of war and families of prisoners of war from the Courthouse in Smethport to the Route 6 bridge over Potato Creek on the boundary of East Smethport.
The purpose of the escort was to honor all POWs and MIAs from all branches of the service over the years in a dedication ceremony of the recently reconstructed highway bridge as the “POW/MIA Memorial Bridge.” Read more

On Saturday, April 24, the American Legion in Smethport conducted a ceremony to rename the bridge on Route 6 over Potato Creek to POW / MIA Memorial Bridge to honor the more than 1,100 veterans from Pennsylvania and 93,000 nationwide who are listed as prisoners of war or missing in action. Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) was the featured speaker. In attendance were two former POWs from the area: Robert Cochran and William Engelhart. At the 9th annual dinner of the Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, guest speaker Dr. Tim Kelsey, professor of agricultural economics at Penn State University, discussed challenges the Borough, local businesses and residents might face as natural gas drilling moves into McKean County.
Drawing upon similar experiences faced by municipalities in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, Kelsey said that housing will be in great demand and public services – schools and law enforcement, among them – could be stressed by the influx of out-of-state workers. Read more
Bernie Reap Chosen as Volunteer of the Year 2010

At last night’s 9th annual business dinner of the Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce held at the American Legion, Bernie Reap was named Volunteer of the Year for 2010 for a lifetime of service to the community. “This award is way overdue,” said Wayne Pearson, who presented the award plaque.
Pearson, last year’s Volunteer of the Year, noted that Bernie Reap has been an active volunteer in the community for over fifty years. “Despite being married with children and a full time job, she found time to be in so many different and varied activities it makes your head spin.” Read more
Dr. James B. Kane Selected as Business of the Year 2010

At the 9th annual business dinner of the Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce held at the American Legion, the dental practice of Dr. James B. Kane was honored as Business of the Year 2010.
Dr. Kane started practicing dentistry in Johnsonburg in 1978, the same year he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He relocated to Smethport in September 1984 and has been at his present location at 8 E. Willow Street since 1991. Read more

CREC Announces Smethport Area School District Winner of Rural Education Award

In an effort to provide more reliable communications with residents and businesses in Smethport, the Borough has implemented an Emergency Notification service provided by SwiftReach Networks, Inc.
Swift911 in its simplest form is a system that makes phone calls to specific people or areas in the event of an emergency or for sharing important information. The benefit of this system is that it can handle a large volume of calls in a short amount of time. Fly Tying Program Concludes at Hamlin Library

The Hamlin Memorial Library hosted a multi-session beginner fly-tying class that concluded on Monday, March 29th. The event was made possible with the aid of a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and drew 18 attendees.
Through a progression of skills, participants learned how to create wet-flies, dry-flies, nymphs and streamers under the expert guidance of Ward Baun, Dan Cousper, Buck Daisley and Mark Cauldwell who provided individual assistance as well as demonstrations that were projected onto a wall for greater visibility.
