Biomass Projects Absolutely Must be to Local “Community-Scale”

The kinds of projects examined in the Associated Press Bio-fuel growth raises concerns about forests article are the very antithesis of the Smethport, Pennsylvania biomass project and our leadership team’s philosophy of “scaled, community-based projects”.
Large, non-scaled projects examined in the Associated Press artice do, in fact, threaten our nations forests, habitats and should be opposed by both state and federal legislation. Giant, unsustainable fuel production such as converting wood as diesel fuel or bio-fuel for automobiles (such as butanol) will not solve our national energy appetite and attempts to refuel the nation using wood based fuels will in fact plunder the forests. Smethport Area High School Presents “North Pole Rock’n Roll”

Smethport Area High School’s annual Christmas concerts always draw a crowded auditorium. This year’s presentation, “North Pole Rock’n Roll,” is no exception. Over 125 students helped concert director, Nan McGraw, put on the show Tuesday evening, Dec. 15 (the show will be repeated on Wed., Dec. 16).
The concert featured the Smethport Concert Choir, the Music ‘n Motion Show Choir, the Jr. Choir, and the 7th Grade Choir.
Traditional Christmas carols were blended with popular show tunes before ending with, “North Pole Rock’n Roll,” performed by the show choir.
Those attending the concert were also delighted by several solos from various members of the singing groups.
Several area businesses donated various gift baskets as raffles to help raise funds for future concerts.
Santa Attends Breakfast for Kids at Bucktail Post #138

Santa talked with children at the annual “Breakfast with Santa” held at Smethport’s Bucktail Post #138 on Saturday Dec. 12. The breakfast was sponsored by the Legion Riders with the help of the Bucktail Post’s Ladies Auxiliary, who cooked and served the breakfast.
Santa arrived on a motorcycle along the sidewalk of Main Street Before entering the Legion and parking his bike inside near a brightly decorated Christmas tree.
Later, after breakfast, children had their photo taken with Santa on his bike or on his chair near the tree. Mrs. Santa helped out.
Senior Center Picks Outdoor Lights Winners

For the 10th consecutive year, Senior Center members boarded a McKeirnan school bus, driven by Judy Carlson, to view and judge the outdoor lights in the Smethport Borough and along E. Main Street to Myra’s restaurant.
The Chamber of Commerce put up cash awards of $50.00 for 1st place, $30.00 for 2nd and $20.00 for 3rd place. Read more

Smethport Garden Club Hosts December Brunch

Members of the Smethport Garden Club hosted a Saturday, Dec. 5th brunch at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
The brunch included Christmas songs played on the piano by Katie Barr and Felicia Alfieri. Katie is home schooled and Felicia is a student at Smethport Area High School.
Plenty of home-made food and baked goods were provided for guests attending the event.
Legion of Trees and Wreaths Ushers in the Holiday Season

Smethport American Legion Bucktail Post #138 and American Legion Auxiliary sponsored the 10th tenth annual Legion of Trees and Wreaths last Friday through Sunday in the post room where the public enjoyed the holiday decorations and placed bids for the trees, wreaths and decorations donated by local businesses and organizations.
Judges for the event were Lori Rounsville, Vicki Alfieri and Judy Church. The entry from Sena Kean Manor took top honors. Second place went to a tree donated by Paige and Honer Rounsville in memory of their mother, Sonja Covert and decorated with Sonja’s angels. A wreath from Buchanan Brothers’ Pharmacy was awarded third place among the 22 entries. Read more
