The Bradford Era — by Fran De Lancey
Longtime Hamlin Memorial Library benefactors Shirley and Bob Digel were honored Saturday at the open house for the library’s new addition.
The couple were surprised when they saw a mural handpainted by Smethport artist Julie Mader — a tribute to the Digels — that depicts themes from their lives as well as topics that are popular with the library’s patrons.
Speaking to the people assembled in the library’s new wing, library board president Mary Palmer briefly summarized the Digels’ volunteerism on behalf of the library. Read more »
Smethport Resident Treated Like “Rock Star” in China
November 23, 2009
Smethport Web
When Smethport resident Matt Muller decided to go to China to teach English as a Second Language, he consulted with Ross and Jovanna Porter who had a similar experience. In their discussions, Ross happened to comment that Matt would be treated as “rock star” there. This raised the eyebrows of Matt’s parents, and Matt himself didn’t know what to make of the seemingly odd comment.
Three months later, now settled in at Xiangnan University in the city Chenzhou in Hunan Province, what seemed to be puzzling comment by Ross has turned into reality for Matt. Read more
Bionic Mayor Returns to Smethport
November 12, 2009
Smethport Web – by Nathan Muller
On Wednesday Mayor Ross Porter returned to Smethport by ambulance from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh to convalesce at Lakeview Living & Rehabilitation. After 10 to 12 weeks of healing from numerous injuries resulting from a recent truck crash, plus several surgeries to put bones back together, an aggressive rehab regimen can be undertaken to help Porter regain full mobility.
Despite all the pain and discomfort, Porter’s good humor seems fully restored, jovially describing his appearance in medical wraps, pads, and supports as making him look like a “turtle.” He reports that among his first priorities when he arrives at Lakeview is to arrange for an Internet connection so he can get back to work with his MacBook and iTouch. When your kudu dries out, who do you call?
November 6, 2009
Smethport Web — by Nathan Muller
No, not the Bowman Health Clinic… This is a job for Timber Ghost Taxidermy, which makes house calls to restore trophy mounts.
Some trophies are too heavy or mounted too high to be easily taken down and brought to the shop where they can be worked on by experts Sergio Herrera and Bryan Burdick. That was the case recently when Timber Ghost received a call from the Bouton House, where a Greater Kudu was in need of some urgent attention. Read more

The Bradford Era - by Joellen Chesnut
The cry for help sent out in August of 2008 by a group of local residents concerned with the upkeep of McKean Memorial Park in Lafayette was heard loud and clear by at least one young set of ears.
Parker Gorrell, a senior at Smethport Area High School, read articles detailing the unkempt and overgrown headstones in the cemetery and wrote up a proposal for his senior project last year while in 11th grade history that explained his intent to undertake the care and preservation of 25 markers in the cemetery. Haunted Carnival Hosted by Bucktail Post #138 Auxilliary
November 1, 2009
Smethport Web — by Les Jordan, Jr.
Spooks, witches, goblins and games where all part of the fun on Halloween at the first Haunted Carnival hosted by the auxiliary of the Smethport Bucktail Post #138.
Children in a variety of Halloween costumes were treated to spooky displays, games and prizes at the carnival.
Much of the displays were created by Dennis and Honor Rounsville. The displays included scary creatures, a pretend dead man or two, carefully carved lighted pumpkins and other Halloween props.
Members of the auxiliary helped children play games and dispensed Halloween treats.
It was great fun by all that attended.

The sessions are funded in part by a PPA grant from the PA Council on the Arts. Call the Hamlin Library 887-5326 or stop in to register.

Two grants - Get Active and WalkWorks – support Smethport residents in their efforts to stay or get fit.
