Smethport Dam to be Removed to Restore Tributary of Wild and Scenic Allegheny River

The Smethport Dam, located on Blacksmith Run west of Smethport, Pennsylvania, will be removed next week to improve public safety and fish passage and to restore a tributary of the Wild and Scenic Allegheny River.

American Rivers funded the design phase of this project in 2005 through a $20,000 award financed by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Growing Greener award. The actual removal of the dam is funded by the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the Richard King Mellon Foundation.   Read more

Matt Muller — Smethport’s China Connection

Smethport resident Matt Muller is off to teach English at a university in Hunan province in south central China. The province is famous for its spicy cuisine and the birthplace of Chinese Communist revolutionary Mao Zedong. The major city there is Chenzhou, home to about 4.5 million people, most of whom, live in the surrounding countryside.

After learning that he would have to wait at least a year before enrolling in a master’s level physician assistant program, Matt decided to go on yet another international adventure, having already visited many countries in Europe, Africa and South America. This time the target of his wanderlust is Asia; specifically, China.

Five Companies to Converge on Smethport Biomass Project

After a year of preparation and planning, work is about to begin on the biomass fueled Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facility in Smethport. The project, which will be rolled out in phases, is intended to demonstrate the use of low value wood as a sustainable alternative energy source for an entire community, serving as a unique model for Pennsylvania and the nation.

The first phase of the CHP project involves conducting a feasibility study and developing a business plan. In March, a Request for Qualifications (RFQs) was sent to 65 engineering firms identified by the U.S. Forest Service and additional organizations located both in the U.S. and Europe. Twelve engineering firms responded with applications for the Smethport project.   Read more

Frank Zitnik Rejoins Bowman Health Center

Frank Zitnik, PA-C, has rejoined the staff at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, working with David Kulling, MD, at the Bowman Health Center in Smethport.

Zitnik previously worked at the Bowman Health Center with Dr. Douglas Bowman for eight years. His health care career spans more than 30 years, having served in numerous capacities, including a charge nurse at CCMH, visiting nurse, and public health director for McKean and Warren counties.   Read more

Clermont Bicentennial Celebration - September 12th

The hilltop area around Clermont will be busy on Sept. 12, 2009 as Clermont celebrates its bicentennial at the Clermont Fire Hall.

The celebration will be from noon until 6:00 p.m. and will feature music by the “Roadies” from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm, along with food, beer and beverage offerings, raffles, and a special appearance from Bubbles the clown who will offer face painting to the children. Read more

Smethport Receives $75,000 Biomass Grant from Forest Service

The USDA Forest Service has committed $75,000 in grant money to help fund the feasibility study and business plan for the woody biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facility in Smethport. The Forest Service and two previous grants bring the total preliminary funding for the project to $150,000.

The grant is provided through the U.S. Forest Service Wood Education and Resource Center located in Princeton, WV, and is administered by the agency’s Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry organization. Read more

Smethport Well Represented in Willow Creek Triathlon

The 4th Annual D.A.V. Willow Creek Triathlon, benefiting disabled American veterans, was held Saturday, drawing 171 participants, including several from Smethport. The course spanned Allegany State Park, NY and Willow Creek, PA.

Participants had to swim 300 yards, bicycle 15 miles, and run 3 miles. Medallions were awarded to the top 3 finishers in each of 11 age classes. Read more
