Media Duo Ignites Fundraising Drive for Fireworks

Jeff and Christie Andrulonis of WLMISmethport residents Jeff and Christie Andrulonis used the power of radio Tuesday to collect donations for fireworks that will be displayed during the National Wooly Willy Wonderdaze festival to be held here June 18 to June 21.

As chairman and co-chairman of the festival, Jeff and Christie did a “Live Action Broadcast” with their WLMI radio station from the court house grounds on Main Street. As drivers listened to fundraising appeals on the radio, they were encouraged to drop off a donation for the fireworks. Jeff and Christie met donors at the curb who stuffed cash into a large orange firecracker. Read more

Lady Hubbers finish track season unbeaten

Smethport (9-0) put the finishing touches on an unbeaten girls track and field season Tuesday, defeating Coudersport 103-47 and Otto-Eldred 108-39.

The unbeaten season is only the second in Lady Hubbers’ track and field history, according to head coach Rick Woodring. The only other unbeaten girls’ season was in 1988 when the team went 8-0.

Tuesday’s victories also clinched the North Tier League championship for the Lady Hubbers. Their last league title was 1998. Read more »

Generations of Smethport residents have enjoyed the music of the Schlecker pipe organ, but played by the talented Diana, the church comes alive with her mastery of the instrument. Get Ready for the National Wooly Willy Wonderdaze Festival

Smethport toy celebrity, Wooly Willy, will once again be the centerpiece of Smethport’s summer festival — National Wooly Willy Wonderdaze from June 22 to June 26.

The festival, sponsored by the Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce, with involvement from many other Smethport organizations, will highlight the popular magnetic toy invented in Smethport by entrepreneur, James Herzog, in 1955. The event includes a Car Show and Parade down Main Street on Saturday, June 26.   Read more

Phillis Barnhart: Woman of the YearThe Smethport Women’s Club has honored Phillis Barnhart with its Woman of the Year award.

Patricia Witchen introduced Phillis as a “believer in our community”. She went on to describe many of Phillis’ activities in Smethport over the years…

“Many of you may not know that she served as one of the stakeholders on the Sesquicentennial committee. She organized the class reunion that over 300 Smethport Alumni attended, the Victorian tea, and served on numerous committees and projects that made the Sesquicentennial a success. The Sesquicentennial was organized by the Chamber of Commerce that she served on as a member of the board of directors and secretary for many, many years. Read more

Hamlin Memorial Library - new entranceKeeping up with the growth at the Hamlin Memorial Library is no easy task. With the computer revolution, the popularity of audio books, and increasing usage of the library in general, the facility has outgrown the 3,000 square-foot-space at 123 Mechanic Street, which has served Smethport since 1991.

Although the library has earned a Pennsylvania Keystone grant for nearly $300,000 to cover the expansion project, it is a matching grant. While the library has gotten off to a good start with contributions, savings and investments, it still needs to raise a significant amount of money. Read more

Dr. David Kulling joins Bowman Health Center

Dr. David KullingCharles Cole Memorial Hospital has announced the addition of David Kulling, MD, FAAFP, to its medical staff, effective April 20. Dr. Kulling will see new and returning patients at the Bowman Health Center in Smethport, formerly known as Misty Valley Health Center. Appointments can me made by calling 814/887-5395.

Dr. Kulling earned a medical degree at Munich University of Technology in Germany. He completed his family medicine residency at Altoona Hospital and a family practice and primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Read more

Charles Cole Contributes over $100 million to Region’s Economy

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital annually contributes nearly $107 million to the region’s economy, according to a report released by The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP). CCMH also supports more than 1,100 jobs in the region, including jobs at the Bowman Health Center in Smethport.

A recent HAP report, The Economic and Social Roles of Pennsylvania’s Hospitals, shows the positive effects Pennsylvania’s hospitals have as economic anchors in their communities. Read more
