“Your whole town is a museum,” Smethport mayor and teacher Ross Porter told the Canoe Place Historical Society in Port Allegany last Wednesday night.
Porter and Smethport students have created Planet Smethport, a Web site that contains some 2,200 “pages” of information.
Initially Smethport photographs from “then” and now, and information relating to buildings, scenes and people in the photos, were the Web site content. Read more
Smethport Airs New Radio Format

Smethport’s 106.3-FM radio station WXMT has changed its format and is fast becoming a favorite channel for classic rock music from the 70s and 80s. It is a great station for “rock without the hard edge,” as the station slogan proclaims. Read more
L.L. Bean Gobbles Up Smethport Product

L.L. Bean, the world famous outdoor apparel and gear maker with over $1.5 billion in annual sales, now features a product made in Smethport – the William Penn Twin Hen Cherry Box Call. The device, designed by Smethport resident Jack Rosenswie, produces both young and mature hen calls, and promises to “bring toms running”. Read more
Hungiville honored during ceremony at Smethport American Legion

Fred Hungiville was honored Sunday at an Honor Day at the Smethport American Legion for his 40 years of service to veterans and Bucktail Post #138.
A special feature of the program came at approximately 2:45 p.m. when Hungiville was able to see and talk via a live hookup with his son, Scott, a first sergeant now serving with the Pennsylvania National Guard in Iraq. Read more »

Borough officials are taking a keen interest in increasing business through tourism, which began when Smethport was named the first Route 6 Heritage Community.
“Every day there are 5,000 cars that travel Main Street that can be tapped into with the right type of advertising and the right kinds of business to make them stop,” said Les Jordan Jr., chairman of the Heritage council’s tourism promotion committee. “The borough is aware of that traffic flow and is doing some things to plan for the future to make those stops happen.” Read more »
Smethport Specialty Influences Toy Deal in Idaho

The recent acquisition of Smethport Specialty Co. by Patch Products Inc. of Beloit, Wisconsin has prompted an Idaho toy company to strike a deal with Patch.
Patch announced that it has entered into an agreement with Überstix LLC to be the exclusive distributor in the United States for the entire Überstix line of interactive construction toys. Read more
Smethport Scores $50K Grant for Biomass CHP Project

Following on the heels of a $25K grant from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, Smethport has received a $50K grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, bringing the total to $75K to help fund the feasibility analysis for the Combined Heat Power (CHP) project planned for the Borough.
“We thank the Richard King Mellon Foundation for helping to raise people’s awareness of alternative energy sources and assisting Smethport in taking its first steps toward energy independence,” said Ross Porter, co-chairman of the Smethport Woody Biomass Leadership Team (SWBLT). Read more
