Hospital to Establish Bowman Scholarship

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, based in Coudersport, has established the Douglas F. Bowman, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dr. Bowman served the hospital and the community in numerous roles including CCMH medical director and board member.
The scholarship will be awarded to a Smethport area student pursuing a health care related career with preference given to those seeking a nursing or medical degree. Recipients will also be chosen based on their interest in serving the community.

Smethport Health Center Accepting New, Returning Patients

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and the Keystone Rural Health Consortia have announced plans to reopen the Bowman Health Center in Smethport in honor of Douglas Bowman, M.D.
Dr. Bowman, a member of CCMH’s medical staff since 1983, served the hospital and Smethport area in numerous capacities until his untimely death November 25. He joined Keystone in 2005 at which time he opened the Misty Valley Health Center.
Under the terms of the joint plan, CCMH affiliated physicians Dr. Amit Khanna, Dr. Seth Shifrin, and Dr. Nirav Patel and nurse practitioner Judy Flynn will see patients at the office’s current location, the Misty Valley Health Center, with Dr. Bowman’s office staff, including physician assistant Crystal Fowler, PA-C. Planet Smethport Marks 10th Anniversary

Ten years ago, Ross Porter undertook the formidable task of chronicling the early history of Smethport and surrounding communities as an ongoing project sponsored by the Smethport Area School District. The project was first announced at the fall 1998 Annual Meeting of the McKean County Historical Society.
With the help of numerous students and volunteers, the online archive known as Planet Smethport now boasts an impressive collection of interlinked photos, newspaper accounts, maps, architectural drawings, 3D renderings, and interactive tours that any historical society would be proud to showcase. Smethport Obtains $25K grant for Combined Heat Power Project

Smethport has taken the first step on the road to achieving energy independence. Ross Porter, co-chairman of Smethport Woody Biomass Leadership Team (SWBLT) announced that the Borough has received a commiment of funds from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. The grant in the amount of $25,000 will be used for developing a feasibility analysis for the Combined Heat Power (CHP) project planned for Smethport. Read more
Obama Inauguration Evokes Memories for Smethport Veteran

President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration scheduled for Tuesday has evoked memories for a Smethport veteran who was among the soldiers who cleared snow from the White House area in preparation for President Lyndon B. Johnson’s inauguration in 1965.
Pete Castelli, then a U.S. Army private, had recently completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., and about three weeks prior to the inauguration, was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va., with the 340th Combat Engineers. Read more >>
