U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., fielded numerous questions at a town meeting Tuesday about the effects of oil and gas drilling on the Allegheny National Forest.
Those posing the questions were concerned about the drilling that they said was having detrimental effects on recreational activities on the forest. Another man mentioned the historic use of the forest and noted the threat to a cemetery close to it. Still another individual pointed to the economic impact that the reduced deer herd is having on local merchants who for years in the past have counted on sales from hunters just before the holiday season.

Dr. Michael Schultz, a former teacher of 30 years and author of “In the Shadow of the Trees”, was the featured speaker at the annual fall dinner meeting of the McKean County Historical Society held on October 16 at the United Christian Church in East Smethport.
Dr. Schultz chronicled the development of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corp — the subject of his book — and the impact of the 165 CCC camps located in Pennsylvania. Read more

Smethport residents gathered at the Shawmut Trail Head behind the 911 Center on an Indian summer Sunday afternoon for a guided nature photography walk. The event was sponsored by the Smethport Creative Arts League and served as a field exercise for naturalists and photographers of all levels who had received a crash course on nature photography by Dr. Tim Pierson in the high school art room last Tuesday. Members of the Potato Creek Trail Association, Ray Dart (front in photo) and Corky Hull (rear in photo), place wooden planks atop the existing deck of a bridge over a small stream crossing the old Pennsylvania Railroad grade near East Smethport. The planks were added to the bridge to provide more strength so horses could safely carry their riders across the stream. Read more

Sights and Sounds of Smethport Homecoming - 2008

October 10th was Homecoming Day in Smethport. The occasion was celebrated with a parade down Main Street, featuring Smethport High School students — Class of 2008 — including Prom Queen candidates, the High School football team and cheerleaders. Also in attendance were school staff and community leaders. The thunderous evening ended with the Smethport Hubbers defeating Sheffield by a score of 40 to 16.
Garden Club’s Tour of Homes Breaks Attendance Record

Last weekend’s Tour of Homes in the Smethport area, sponsored by the Smethport Garden Club, was attended by nearly 200 people, breaking the record for this event. People came from several surrounding towns in the Smethport area and from nearby New York State and other states across America.
It was a perfect autumn day for the tour with warm sunshine and vivid autumn colors on the trees lining Smethport’s residential area. A steady stream of people was visible throughout the borough all afternoon as they walked along those streets on the tour. Read more
My Journey to See a Fellow Filipino

There is nothing more inspiring for a first generation Filipino immigrant like me than to witness firsthand a fellow countryman doing well in the international arena. It is firsthand knowledge that most Filipinos living in the United States are in healthcare, therefore the story of Arnel Pineda is definitely something different and truly a tale that needs to be told.
Arnel is the current front man for Journey, the San Francisco based band well known for huge 1980s hits such as Don’t Stop Believing, Faithfully, and Open Arms. Since their most popular lead singer, Steve Perry, left the band in 1996, the band has had a string of replacements from Steve Augeri to Jeff Scott Soto. Read more
