Mike RocheThe first Arts and Artisans show was a great success in Smethport. The show, which was held in conjunction with the Wheel Around the Hub Bicycle Race on Saturday, Sept. 20, drew good crowds for participating vendors and musicians.

The Country Porch Café and Gift Shoppe sponsored the “Smethport Route 6 Artisan Show” along the 100 block of W. Main Street. Artists from around the area offered their fine art for sale throughout the day while bicyclists raced along Main Street. Read more

Optical fibersA system of optical fiber connections is being put in place in the North Central region. Steve Zwerin, senior director of Zito Media Communications, told a meeting of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission last week that the first high speed connection will go online in McKean County within the next two months to cover Smethport as well as Bradford, Kane and Wilcox. New Records in Wheel Around the Hub Cycling Race

Only nine tenths of a second determined the winner of the men’s competition in Smethport’s annual Wheel Around the Hub cycling races. After careful study of all recording devices at the finish line, 19-year-old Cheyne Hoag of Dansville, New York, emerged as the winner of the 53-mile race, narrowly edging Jason Zimmerman of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Smethport observed the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America with a Patriot Day Memorial Remembrance Service Thursday on the steps of the McKean County Courthouse.

Members of the Bucktail Post 138, Smethport American Legion and McKean County Post 2497, Veterans of Foreign Wars planned and conducted the ceremony that paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 firemen, rescue, law enforcement, military personnel and other citizens who sacrificed their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The leaves on this tree have already begun to change color as fall quickly approaches. Experts say the fall foliage viewing season could be the best in years, due to a wet summer and lack of a May frost.

Due to a wet summer and lack of a May frost, the upcoming months may produce one of the more splendid displays of fall foliage the region has seen in years, said state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Warren District Forester Cecile Stelter. Read more
