Sweet Redemption for Hahn, Smethport
May 30, 2008
Olean Times Herald — by Vinny Pezzimenti
It seemed only fitting that Hahn was smack dab in the middle of the Hubbers’ 2-1 victory over nemesis Curwensville in the District 9, Class A championship. Last year, after it all, it was Hahn’s dropped fly ball in leftfield that kept alive a 2-run inning for the Golden Tide in its 4-3 district semifinal win over Smethport. That was the only loss for the Hubbers in 2007 and kept them from a fifth straight trip to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state playoffs. Hahn effectively pitched in out and of trouble through the middle innings and landed a big blow with her bat, a double in the top of the seventh inning, that resulted in the winning run. Read more

May 29, 2008
The Braford Era
The punch probably tasted a little sweeter and the cookies were a little fresher at the Smethport High sports banquet Thursday evening after the Lady Hubbers brought home the District 9 Class A softball title following a 2-1 win over Curwensville earlier in the day. “I have a banquet tonight and I’m going to bawl through the whole speech,” said Christine Lightner, Smethport head coach. “I don’t know what I’m going to say. I’m so excited. We needed this District 9 championship and it’s been a long time (2004) since we had one.” The Lady Hubbers (20-1) disposed of their old nemesis as defending PIAA champion Curwensville (20-2) had knocked Smethport out of the D-9 semifinals the past two seasons. Bronze Statue Unveiled at Smethport Elementary
May 23, 2008
Elementary student Emily Dibble’s (right) winning essay last year earned her the privilege of becoming the model for Jamestown, New York sculptor Dave Poulin. Emily’s essay was selected by the 5th grade teachers to become the concept for a statue of a student that will be placed in front of the school. The bronze sculpture was unveiled at the Smethport Elementary School on Thursday.
The unveiling was preceded by a talented chorus rendition of peppy show tunes — “That’s Entertainment” and “Doctor Jazz” — under the direction of Mrs. Aloi. Sixth grade student Bryce Henry played Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” on Spanish guitar. This was followed by the band’s performance of the rock classic, “Louie Louie,” which raised the decibel level of students and teachers. Read more
