Memorial Tree Planted in Gerry Coleman’s Memory

Friends of John “Gerry” Coleman gathered on April 27, 2008 to plant a swamp white oak in his memory on Arbor Day. Gerry passed away on March 21, 2005.

The Smethport Shade Tree Committee assisted in the selection of the tree species and the planting site on Hamlin Lake Island.

Hancock Forest Management Celebrates Arbor Day with Borough’s Jump Start Program

Hancock Forest Management’s donation of a sugar maple tree initiated Smethport Borough’s Shade Tree Jump Start program Tuesday, April 22nd. The tree was planted at the company office located on East Main Street, Smethport in honor of Arbor Day. Read more
PCTA Holds First Public Meeting

The first public meeting of the Potato Creek Trail Association drew 40 attendees to the Court of Angels restaurant Wednesday evening. The meeting, hosted by Ross Porter, featured several speakers who provided an update on trail projects in the area and their potential impact on Smethport. Read more
New Artist Guild Formed
April 20, 2008
The Smethport Artists’ & Artisans’ Guild was formed on April 8 to cultivate and promote the creative arts and encourage community participation in visual and performing arts. Hosted at the Keppel Stone Works Studio, the new Guild drafted bylaws governing its activities, which are expected to include exhibitions, performances, shows, workshops and demonstrations. Membership is open to Smethport region residents at $5 for students of at least 16 years of age, $10 for individuals, and $25 for families. The Guild intends to file for 501(c) (3) tax exempt status.
Smethport Arbor Days Workshop Kicks-Off Community Development Block Grant Reforestation Project

Penn State Cooperative Extension and the Smethport Borough Shade Tree Commission will be hosting a three hour Arbor Day workshop. The Planting and Maintaining Street Trees Workshop will be held on Sunday, April 27 at the Smethport Area High School library, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. The workshop will cover all aspects of planting and after care of shade trees and shrubs. The workshop will include a hands-on tree planting experience with trees scheduled to be planted in the Borough. Read more
Regional Computer Fair Finalists Selected

The 7th annual Seneca Highlands IU-9 Regional Computer Fair Competition was held April 8 in Smethport. Over 20 students submitted projects in various computer-related categories. There was also competition for the 2009 Computer Fair logo, which will appear on materials, caps and T-shirts publicizing next year’s event.
This year’s regional competition was administered by Instructional Technology Specialist Karl Roeper. The projects were reviewed and scored by 7 judges according to how well students met various development criteria.

Historical Society & Old Jail Museum Reopens

The McKean County Historical Society and Old Jail Museum on 502 W. King Street has reopened after its winter hiatus. The county’s oldest building, constructed in 1875 and used as a jail until 1990, houses an impressive collection of historical artifacts and genealogical records. Read more
